Family Day Outing - A Day Trip To Durian Orchard @ Macap

Update On 10, April 2011

Day trip to durian orchard is back!!

Due to too many people are interested to join the trip and not enough fruits to sample, we need to postpone the trip to mid of June as advised by the orchard owner. Will keep you posted with the new date.

This time, I'm proposing our Durian Trip an orchard in Macap, Sim Koa Yen (成果园), which is an organic orchard that has won many awards and is certified by ministry of Agriculture with SALM, one that observes Good Agricultural Practices.

Beside durian, there are also other fruits as well as other attraction at Sim Koa Yen.

For Durian Buffet, the cost is Rm40 per head (Rm20 per head for children aged from 6 -12 year).

I am proposing the outing to be held on Sunday 17, April, 2011. (in fact the best time would be this month as it is the peak season).

The Memory Walk 2010 on 17th Oct 2010 was attended by the Honorable Menteri Besar Selangor, Tan Sri Khalid, EXCO Ronnie Liu, Dato Khalid Samad , Dato Bandar Mazlan, Councillors, Rotarians, MBSA Staff and friends in Shah Alam.
At 7;30 AM the event was launched by MB and EXCo members to begin the approx 3km walk from Dataran Kemerdekaan around Shah Alam and back to Dataran Kemerdekaan.

• PP Andy has planned for the intercity meetings while at the same time will promote membership development.

Pres Ellias welcomed Club Rotarians, Guest & Guest speaker. He chaired the meeting and proceeded to make various announcements (see club’s news).
Pres Ellias informed that 3 Rotarians will attend “The Rotary Foundation Seminar” on Sun, 1st Aug 2010 and PP Andy will be attending PR Seminar on Sat, 14th Aug 2010 which was organized by the District.
The guest Speaker Mr Lim Kok Peng spoke about his teaching experience in China in Fujian Province. His talk generated a lot of interest among the Rotarians.
PP Jani had attended “Facilitator Training Program” to encourage communication with younger generation such as the Interactors that was jointly organized by Rotary.

Club’s News and Announcement

The second Board of Directors Meeting will be held on Mon, 2nd Aug 2010 at 8.30 pm, Kelab Shah Alam.
Club Assembly will be held on Wed, 4th Aug 2010 to discuss the revised budget and projects for RY 2010/11. PP Kenny reminded Rotarians to wears name tag (and if possible in Rotary jacket too!) during meetings.
Meetings will be held to discuss project “Memory Walk” which is a joint project between RCSA, ADFM & MBSA. The G.O.H is YB Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, the Menteri Besar of Selangor.
Second Child abuse seminar will be held on Wed, 4th Aug 2010 at Holiday Villa. It is joint project between RC Bandar Utama, RC Titiwangsa & RC Sungei Way.
Presentation on wheelchair will be held on Fri, 30th Jul 2010 at Angsana Flat. PP Andy is leading this project.
ADFM International seminar will be held on Oct 22-24, 2010 and the fee is RM 350/person. The discounted rate is RM 250/person.
Taman Interactor project of SMK Section 19 will be held on Fri, 30th Jul 2010.

Hand Over Night

Rotary year under the leadership of President Jani is coming to its end by the 30 June 2010.

A simple Handing Over Ceremory was held in our regular fellowship night on the 25 June, 2010 to symbolise the transfer of 'Power' from current president to the Incoming President Ir. Ellias.

In the same night, President Jani and his Ann took the opportunity to honour his boards and the dedicated rotarians who were present that night for their contributions towards the club and the rotary movement.

A Joke - just incredible!!

There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses.

One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about.

The letter read:

Dear God,

I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension.

Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment.

Friday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope.. Can you please help me?

The postal worker was touched.. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars.

By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman.

The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

Christmas came and went.

A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God.

All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened.

It read:

Dear God,

How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me?

Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift.

By the way, there was $4 missing.

I think it might have been those bastards at the post office.

Trip To Durian Orchard

A large group of more than 30 persons making up of members of RCSA and their families and the rotarian friends joined the outing on 21st March 2010 to a fruit orchard in Raud, Pahang.

The Good Old Ladies

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.
One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me....I know we've been friends for a long time.....but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is.'
Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?'

Project Shine 7

The Sun, the Sea and the Underprivileged

It was a beautiful Friday morning, 12th of March, 2010, when 9 physically challenged people, 10 teenagers from a home for children of difficult families, and Rotarians of Shah Alam, their family members and friends left Shah Alam in a coach for Glory Beach Resort in Port Dickson for a 3D/2N weekend outing. This was an annual community service project of the Rotary Club of Shah Alam, known as Project Shine VII, to bring a little sunshine and laughter to the life of some of the less fortunate members of our society. It was the 7th in a series of such projects started in the year 2002.

For 3 days and 2 nights, the 19 underprivileged guests of the Rotary Club of Shah Alam were provided with accommodation and meals in the beach resort. With the help of the Rotarians, family members and friends, the guests participated in tele-matches, enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the swimming pool, and played a game of basketball against the Rotarians. Every participant of the event was given a T-shirt and a baseball cap, and every guest won a prize from the tele-matches.

It was a very successful and memorable outing, as some of the participants readily expressed. Teo Kah Choon, a polio victim working in Subang Jaya Medical Centre, participated in some of the earlier Projects Shine before and was ever so grateful to the Rotarians of Shah Alam for taking the trouble to take him and other wheelchair-bound people to places of interest in different parts of our country. “Because of our physical handicap, we rarely have a chance to go anywhere away from our home and working place,” he said.

Rahimah Andungai, also a polio victim, participated in Project Shine for the first time and she had a most wonderful and memorable time in Port Dickson. She works in Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam.

Letchumy Supramaniam works in the Police Headquarters in Bukit Aman. She is also a polio victim. But she is a very jovial character despite her physical handicap. She may not be able to dance to the music, but she can rock her wheelchair in line with the music tempo. She really appreciated the Rotary Club’s effort in organizing community service projects like this to bring some cheers to the mundane life of the underprivileged.

The teenagers’ feelings about this event were best summed up by 14 year-old Pavithrashini: “Sir, why is the outing over so fast? Why are we going home so soon?”

The organizers of the event had enjoyed the outing as much as the guests did, and we are looking forward to the next Project Shine.

As part of our club's Service Project for this RY, we selected the Good Samaritan Home at Jalan Banting in Klang to help pay their children's school books and school fees for this new school year . We may also visit them every month until the end of this RY to bring them some frozen food. Shown above are some photos taken during our visit to the Home on Wed, 13 Jan 2010. Today, 10th January, 2010, is definitely a very proud moment of RCSA. Our PP Mansoor Saat has been officially announced as District Governor Nominee 2 (DGN2) during the last day of the 75th District Conference at Grand Dorsett Subang.

PP Mansoor is expected to take office as District Governor (DG) from July, 2012.

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.

He argued: "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about teachers: "Those who can...do. Those who can't...teach."

To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied, "You want to know what I make?"

"I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could."

Pres. Venugopal (acting) chaired the meeting and make the following announcements/report:
1. Welcome the visiting Rotarians PP Jee and Pres. June from RC Sungei Way and all Rotarians attending the meeting.
2. He reminded Rotarians and Anns of the ADFM public lecture on 3Rd October at Grand Blue Wave Hotel, Shah Alam. Rtn Ee Hooi will be the MC for the event.
3. He prompted Rotarians for a moment of silence in grief for the passing of our honorary member Dato’ M. Junid on 28th September 2009. PP Mansoor will coordinate compilation of eulogies to be published in the District newsletter.

Club News and Announcements

Secretary Dr Low notified members of the next BOD meeting at Kampong Ku restaurant, Subang Jaya on 5th October at 800 pm.
Standing Committee on Projects will meet on 2nd of October, 400 pm at Rtn. Dr Abdul Rahman’s open house.
PP James reported that the RCSA flyers were being printed and Pres. Venugopal will solicit the assistance of Kelab Alam Shah to send the flyers through KAS correspondence directory.
PP James reported that a total of RM 5000 was received through donation for the charity screening of the movie.
PP Jee and Pres. June of RC Sungei Way invited RCSA Rotarians to attend their installation dinner at Kiara Restaurant on 31st October. The cost is RM 80 per pack.

PP Kenny announced that the Standing Committee on Projects will meet on 2nd of October, 400 pm at Rtn. Dr Abdul Rahman’s office when he hosts the HARI RAYA gathering.
PP James reported that the Rotary flyer has been edited numerous times and will be sent for printing the following week.
The Club Administration committee will meet on 28th September. This was subsequently changed to 29th September in joint meeting with Fund raising committee meeting at PP James’ residence.

Other events of the night

PE Elias presented a video trailer of the block buster movie “2012”. He asked for full participation from Rotarians to help sell the tickets.

Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong gave a talk on his enduring involvement with Rotary in “ My 43 Years with Rotary”. His encouraging talk was very well received and Dato’ Vincent Tang thanked the speaker and presented him with the certificate of appreciation.

Birthday cake cutting for Ann Stella was joyously celebrated by everyone present.

1. ADFM public lecture in which RCSA is the organizing partner, will be held on 3rd October 2009. Rtn. Ee Hooi reported that 150 participants have registered to attend the event.
2. Reminded that the SAA be included to attend the BOD meeting as agreed in the BOD meeting.
3. Urged each standing committee to conduct regular monthly meeting.
4. Announced that the next luncheon meeting will be replaced with Friday night meeting on 25th September.

Club News and Announcements

PP Andy conveyed the invitation of RCBU to attend their installation Dinner on 26th September at RM80/pax. There is a joint project between RCSA, RCBU and RC Titiwangsa to provide training to Rotarians/Anns to become counselor to the sexually abused children which is related to the FUSION EXCEL initiatives. The target dates are on 24/25/26 & 31st October 2009.
PP James announced that the speaker for the fellowship night meeting on 25th September is Tan Sri Soong Siew Hoong who will speak on his 43 years in Rotary. He also conveyed the interest of RC P. Jaya to have a joint meeting with RCSA.
The Club is trying to raise fund through charity screening of blockbuster movie “2012” through sponsors and ticket sales. Assisting PE Ellias in the task are: PP Kenny as event director, Rtn Dong as treasurer, PP James on publicity and media, PP Mansoor on other club relations and Rtn Ee Hooi on ticket sales.
Members gave PP Mansoor unanimous support for his candidacy for the District Governor in 2012-2013. The secretary will prepare a formal resolution to be submitted to the District.

Basically --- the rain dropped by Ondoy in the metropolis in a span of 6 or 7 hours that strated early during the day (last Saturday) is equivalent to typical one month of rain during monsoon season. That plus the release of excess water from the two water reservoir and dams close to Manila made rivers overflowed to streets and housing and commercial areas as early as noon of last Saturday. (There could have been more deaths had the flooding occurred at night.)

Don't write-off any situation!

A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well. The farmer heard the mule 'braying' -- or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer felt sorry for the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and asked them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back: he should shake it off and step up! This is what the old mule did, blow after blow. "Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself.

No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought "panic" and just kept right on shaking it off and stepping up! You guessed it! It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him, actually end up blessing him. All because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

SMK SSAAS organised a project to beautify its school compound - " Majlis Minggu Kecergasan dan Operasi Indah Ceria" on the 18th of June, 2009. The Interact Club of SMK SSAAS participated in the above project to build a garden - "Interact Garden" for the school.

The Board of Directors of RCSA agreed to contribute towards the project by sponsoring the materials like timber baords, screws and paint materials for construction of 2 sets of garden table and benches and arranged some volunteers to guild our members and the interactors to build them in 'Gotong Royong' style.

A New Daughter-in-law

It is a myth that when a son gets married and a new daughter-in-law arrives in the family, everything changes. Some are well trained and well mannered !!!!!. They don't come to change the family, they are there to............!!

The new wife was being welcomed at the husband's home in a traditional manner. As expected she gave a speech:

"My dear family, I thank you for welcoming me into my new home and family", she said "Firstly, my being here does not mean that I would want to change your way of life, your routine. No, I will never do that, never in a million years".

"What do you mean my child ?" Asked the father in law.

"What I mean dad is (looking at her father in law):

Those who used to wash dishes must carry on washing them.

Those who used to do the laundry must carry on doing it.

Those who cooked shouldn't stop at my account, and those who used to clean should continue cleaning".

"Then what are you here for ?" Asked the mother in law.

A Nagging Wife Story

An old hillbilly farmer had a wife who nagged him unmercifully. From
morning ~til night she was always complaining about something.
The only time he got any relief was when he was out plowing with his old
mule.
He tried to plow a lot.

One day, when he was out plowing, his wife brought him lunch in the
field. He drove the old mule into the shade, sat down on a stump, and
began to eat his lunch.
Immediately, his wife began nagging him again.

Complain, nag, complain, nag - it just went on and on. All of a
sudden, the old mule lashed out with both hind feet, caught her smack
in the back of the head.
Killed her dead on the spot.

At the funeral several days later, the minister noticed something
rather odd. When a woman mourner would approach the old farmer, he
would listen for a minute, then nod his head in agreement; but when a
man mourner approached him, he would listen for a minute, then shake
his head in disagreement.
This was so consistent, the minister decided to ask the old farmer about
it.
So after the funeral, the minister spoke to the old farmer,
and asked him why he nodded his head and agreed with the women, but
always shook his head and disagreed with all the men.

The old farmer said, 'Well, the women would come up and say something
about how nice my wife looked, or how pretty her dress was, so I'd nod
my head in agreement.'
'And what about the men?' the minister asked.

'They wanted to know if the mule was for sale.'

A WOMAN was flying from Seattle to San Francisco . Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sacramento along the way..
The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind.
The man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight. He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because thepilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, "Kathy, we are in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?" The blind lady replied, "No thanks, but maybe
Buddy would like to stretch his legs."
Picture this: All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines! True story... Have a great day and remember...

(and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still
standing on the curb.

'Well, to tell you the truth,' says the Pope, 'they never let me drive
at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and I'd really like to drive
today.'
'I'm sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my
job! What if something should happen?' protests the driver, wishing
he'd never gone to work that morning.
'Who's going to tell?' says the Pope with a smile?
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind

'Please slow down, Your Holiness!' pleads the worried driver, but the

but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and
gets on the radio.

I N N E R H A P P I N E S S

I live in Indore, in India 's heartland. On our way back from an
adjacent town, my friend and I stopped at a highway dhaba. Placing
our order, we stretched ourselves out on the cane chairs. A motley
group of people occupied other tables.

As we glanced around desultorily, a ragged man sauntered in and sat
down. He poured himself a glass of water from the steel jug. He drank
two whole glasses, but ordered no food, nor did the dhaba boys ask
him. When our tea and samosas arrived, he looked at the food, filled
his glass again and drank it. We saw no greed in his eyes, but it was
an easy guess, that the guy was hungry and had no money.

The dhaba boy told us 'Oh! That madman comes in everyday. If he has
money, he eats something; otherwise he just drinks a few glasses of
water and leaves. My boss said that since water has been given to us
by the Lord, we must never stop anyone drinking it at our dhaba.'

This logic really touched me. I asked the boy to serve the man a
plate of samosas. When he did so, the man looked at him. The boy
pointed to us. The man looked at us but made no acknowledgement. As
he picked up the first samosa, a little girl in rags walked up and
just stood there. He gave her the samosa, which she wolfed down. He
picked up the second one and handed that to her, too. She grabbed it
and ran away. He pushed away his empty plate, filled up his glass
again, drank the water and walked away from the dhaba without a
backward glance.

I asked myself if I were capable of a gesture like that. The most I
could muster was 'I HOPE SO'. If sharing what we have in excess is
generosity, then how would we describe what that madman did?
'SELFLESS LOVE'?

It is what intellectuals talk about and madmen practice.

Put about 100 bricks in some particular order in a closed room with an Open window. Then send 2 or 3 candidates in the room and close the door. Leave them alone and come back after 6 hours and then analyze the situation.

If they are counting the Bricks > Put them in the accounts Department .
If they are recounting them > Put them in auditing
If they have messed up the Whole place with the bricks > Put them in engineering .
If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order > Put them in planning . If they are throwing the bricks at each other > Put them in operations .
If they are sleeping > Put them in security .

PP Venugopal is an accountant by training and his classification is Financial Consultancy.
He became a Rotarian in 1991. He served in several capacities in the club and became the President in RY 1997-98.In the RY 2008-09, PP Venugopal undertake a major assignment of heading a committee that reviewed our 29 year old club constitution and updating it in preparation for the implementation of the Club Leadership Plan in RY 2009-10.

MANSOOR SAAT
By far the most popular member in the club! He is unanimous with the Rotary Club of Shah Alam. I was once shocked to learn that other Rotarians are asking me of being a “Mansoor” club instead of Shah Alam club.
Mansoor is a corporate legal advisor to an IT & Security company. He also hold office in the district and has been the District editor for 2 years in the running.
Mansoor is a good mentor and would be a good custodian in the club. He is the TRF chair for our Rotary Year 2009-2010.

JAMES WONG
James by profession is valuer and has been in the field of choice for more than 30 years.
A bit lanky, but work with the highest ethical standard ever seen even at club level with no compromising to target set. Has been successful in all the projects that he undertakes. James is respected by other Rotarian outside the club. James is a moving asset of the club. James will now head the chair for Public Relations.

IR ELLIAS SAIDIN
Ellias is a civil engineer by profession. His dream is to build a tunnel under the sea ( like the euro tunnel ) linking Melaka and Bandong. (I don’t know why he wants to do that) but he says this will cut down sea pirate and prevent smuggling.
Ellias has served many vocation before being proposed as a P.E ( President-Elect). Of late he has been making up a lot in Cambodia and has proposed that Shah Alam look for a sister club in Cambodia.

Thomas is a lawyer, practicing in litigation (Whatever it mean). Thomas was originally assign the PR chair but have now been moved to a more challenging role of club administration.
Thomas will continue the good work done by Dr. Rahman and will be expected to contribute significantly in the club administration.

DONG SECH SING
Dong is an engineer turn money man in our club. He has passion for money and knows exactly where money is short.
He is so efficient that he not only closes this current year accounts book, but also try to close my year which has not started yet!
He even try to audit the auditor and somehow able to show that even auditor can be audited.
Dong, you have done a fantastic job - for being good you continue to serve the club as Hon. Treasurer for another year. Dong, you make us all very accountable – I am proud of you.

KONG LIN TOH

L T Kong is an engineer by profession. He is one of the youngest Rotarian in RCSA - appropriately positioned to take up the role of New Generation Director in our current Rotary year.
Kong has successfully lead four interact clubs to a new level having guided these young leaders to be involved into many meaningful projects.
His effort has brought the various Pengetuas and Teacher advisors in respective schools to have very cordial relationship with the our RCSA officers.
Kong is now the Project Service 2 Chair in RY 09/10, and we anticipate a lot of new ideas coming from his leadership.

PP KENNY LIM ENG KEONG
PP Kenny was almost made a permanent Honorary Secretary for the Shah Alam club, having serving the position for more than 3 years - position equaled only by PP Charles Kok.
Kenny has been a good teacher to me and many other new Rotarians. He is well equipped with rotary information and also ready to lend a hand to anyone requiring his services.
He has travelled widely and active in outdoor activity. He is physically fit and has the energy like ‘Popeye’ cartoon series.
Kenny now sits in the Project Service chair.

PP DR LOW GUAN TUI
Dr Low is an engineer by profession and has been the past president of the club and my source of inspiration. He is very articulate and makes good coach if you want him to do one!
Dr Low hailed from Kelantan and speak like ‘Tok Guru’ when he preach.
He is systematic and have great ideas forward every time we ask him to contribute. For what he is…. he is knowledgeable in Rotary Information and has read the MOP and other related Rotary manual from cover to cover. Dr. Low, you are definitely cut for a Honorary Secretary position.

DR. RAHMAN
Dr Rahman is a doctor with a difference! He is not typical of doctors that you may find elsewhere!
He is multi-tasking and multi facets, is very serious at the tasks assigned to him. He is reputed to develop our club webpage and the blogspot with few days of agreeing to do it.
But he can also be very serious when he wants too. At one time, I heard he gave ‘hell’ of a time to our Treasure – when he insisted that all check to be x-rayed before depositing it to the bank.
I am truly very proud of Dr Rahman to be my Vice President (deputizing me when I’m away!) – Dr Rahman will also continue to support the club administration.

An Obituary printed in the London Times........ Interesting and sadly
rather true
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has
been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his
birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be
remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to
come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't
always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in
charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from
school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding
an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent
to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform
parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and
criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar
in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her
lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his
wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason...
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

Once upon a time .......

Once upon a time in Singapore , there lived a happy couple, Mr. & Mrs. Ng with their 3 lovely daughters; Elaine, Ena & Ella.
The 3 daughters were brought up in a prim-and-proper way and when they reached 20, they were still virgins.
Years passed, and it was time to get them married. So, the parents found them the most suitable ' leng chais' (handsome guys). They got married and were preparing to set-off on their honeymoon.
As 'concerned' (more like 'kay-poh') parents, Mr.& Mrs. Ng were curious about their daughters' first-night experience. So, before the daughters went on their respective honeymoons, Mrs. Ng told them......'Your father and I want to know about your 1st night encounters and whether you are satisfied. Write a letter to us, but as not to raise your husbands' curiosity... you all must use a code-name to describe your experiences' ... So, the excited daughters were off.
A week passed. Mr. & Mrs. Ng got the first letter. It was from Elaine. They opened the letter and found the word STANDARD CHARTERED. They immediately took the newspaper and looked for the Standard Chartered advertisement. 'Ah! here it is!', exclaimed Mr. Ng. The motto for Standard Chartered was... 'BIG, STRONG & FRIENDLY'. Mr & Mrs. Ng were happy.
A week later, they got another letter. This time it was from Ena. The content was simple. 'NESCAFE'. So, again they took the newspaper and looked for the Nescafe ad. 'Ah! here it is. 'NESCAFE: PLEASURE TILL THE LAST DROP'. Mr. & Mrs. Ng beamed with joy.
Another week passed. A month passed. And another. There was still no letter from Ella. The Ngs became worried. Finally, the letter came. It was scribbled and could hardly be read, but Mrs. Ng managed to figure it out. The code-name was 'SINGAPORE AIRLINES'. Why Singapore Airlines? Mr.Ng rushed to the nearest store and got a newspaper. He flipped the pages frantically. 'Ah! Here it is!' Mrs. Ng grabbed the page and read aloud. Before she could finish ...THUMP!!!. ..she fell off her chair. The motto was ...'7 TIMES A WEEK. 4 TO 6 TIMES A DAY. NON-STOP'.

An Irish Ghost Story

This story happened a while ago in Dublin , and even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it's true.

John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm.

The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him.
Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped.

John , desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door.... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn’t on.

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life.

Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window, and turned the wheel. John , paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.

Shortly thereafter, John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength; he jumped out of the car and ran to it.

Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had.

A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying… and wasn’t drunk.
Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John , were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other.....

'Look Paddy.....there's that bloody idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!!!!'

he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG).
He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA ),
designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE )
and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA )
After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA )
he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO )
to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN )
to the radio (MADE IN INDIA )
he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY )
filled it with GAS (from Saudi Arabia )
and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.
At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (Made In Malaysia ),
John decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL )
poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE )
and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ),
and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA
AND NOW HE'S HOPING HE CAN GET HELP FROM A PRESIDENT MADE IN KENYA

Heaven or Hell?

A holy man was having a conversation with God one day and said, ' God , I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.'
God led the holy man to two doors.
He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in.
In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water.
The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished.
They were holding spoons with very long handles, that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.
But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.
The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
God said, 'You have seen Hell.'
They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one.
There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water.
The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but herethe people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'
It is simple,' said God . 'It requires but one skill.
You see they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.'
Remember that I will always share my spoon with you...

A Woman's Week At The Gym

Dear Diary,

For my birthday this year, my Husband (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school football cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Christo, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My husband seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress. ________________________________

MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Christo waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with blond hair, dancing eyes and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!
Christo gave me a tour and showed me the machines. I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which he conducted his aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring! Christo was encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time he was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week-!! ______________________

TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out the door. Christo made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air then he put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. His rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT-!! It's a whole new life for me. _______________________________

WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying the toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot. Christo was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members. His voice is a little too perky for that early in the morning and when he scolds, he gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying…..
My chest hurt when I got on the treadmill, so Christo put me on the stair monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered obsolete by elevators? Christo told me it would help me get in shape and enjoy life. He said some other shit too. _________

THURSDAY: Asshole was waiting for me with his vampire-like teeth exposed as his thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late - it took me that long to tie my shoes. He took me to work out with dumbbells. When he was not looking, I ran and hid in the restroom. He sent some skinny bitch to find me. Then, as punishment, he put me on the rowing machine -- which I sank. _________________________________

FRIDAY: I hate that bastard Christo more than any human being has ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic, anorexic little aerobic instructor. If there was a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat him with it. Christo wanted me to work on my triceps. I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the damn barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?_________

SATURDAY: Satan left a message on my answering machine in his grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing his voice made me want to smash the machine with my planner; however, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel. _______________________

SUNDAY: I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year my husband will choose a gift for me that is fun -- like a root canal or a hysterectomy. I still say if God had wanted me to bend over, he would have sprinkled the floor with diamonds!!!

The Moral of A Good Story

There is another version of the George Washington cherry tree incident.
Pak Longkang's family was living in one of those floating raft houses along the Jerantut river. One day one of his naughty sons pushed the jamban into the river!
Fuming Pak Longkang couldn't get any of his 6 sons to admit doing it. So he used psychology and refered to the Washington cherry tree incident. He told the 6 sons that when G Washington's father found out that someone had cut down his favorite cherry tree, he was fuming mad. Non of the sons would admit doing it. Eventually G Washington was the one who stood up and claimed that he cut down the cherry tree. His father was extremely proud; praised and forgave him. He grew up to become President George Washington.
Hearing this, Pak Longkang's 2nd son, Mat Bodoh thought he also would like to be a hero and promptly admitted that it was he who pushed the jamban into the river.

Project Shine is Rotary Club of Shah Alam's annual community service project to bring some sunshine to the life of some of the less fortunate members of our society. The first Project Shine was successfully carried out in Endau-Rompin National Park in Johor on 15-18 March 2002.This year's Project Shine, the 6th in the series, took place in Fraser's Hill on 13-15 March, 2009. 10 orphans from Shepherd's centre in Semenyih, 8 disabled people from Persatuan Damai Orang-Orang Kurang Upaya Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan in Petaling Jaya and Independent Living & Training Centre in Rawang, and 2 mouth-and-foot artists from Taman Sinar Harapan in Kuala Kubu Baru, were invited to participate. Unfortunately 3 of the diabled guests could not join us at the eleventh hour due to family commitments. We also invited Mis Lim Fua Kein of Taman Sinar Harapan and some friends of Rotary to help us out. 7 Rotarians and their spouses and family members helped carry out the project.Rtn. Soon Ee Hooi was the coordinator for this project. She meticulously planned the program, booked the hotel and transport, and invited the orphans from Shepherd's Centre to participate. PP Chin Mee Poon helped to invite the disabled participants and supervised the transport from Kelab Shah Alam Selangor to Fraser's Hill and back. He was also the official photographer for the event. The other Rotarians and Anns who helped out in one way or another were: Community Service Director PP James Wong and Ann Stella, Rtn. Kong Ling Thoh and Ann Yong Foong Mee, Rtn. Dong Sech Sing and Ann Cheri Lim, PP Andy Ooi and Ann Jennifer, and IPP Dr. Low Guan Tui and Ann Wah Lean. Of course Rtn. Soon Ee Hooi's spouse Quek Peng Chai and PP Chin Mee Poon's Ann Lee Beng Eng also played an active part in the event.Pres. Chandra could not join us in Fraser's Hill because of health constraints, but he made it a point to see the participants off at Kelab Shah Alam Selangor on 13.03.2009 morning.All the participants had a great time on Fraser's Hill. We had 3 meals a day plus 2 tea breaks and a supper! The weather was kind to us. The greeneries and cool, fresh air invigorated everyone.On the first day, most of the participants checked into the hotel at about 13:30 hrs and had lunch immediately. At about 16:00 hrs most of the participants went for a jungle walk led by PP Chin Mee Poon. We took the 1 km long Hemmant Trail that runs along the northern edge of the 9-hole golf course.On Day 2, we followed expert birder Durai for bird watching after breakfast. It was a most educational and rewarding walk for one and all, including those on wheelchair. We saw many birds, including lesser racket-tailed drongo, silver-eared mesia and long-tailed sibia. Durai also pointed out some interesting plants to us, including fish-tailed palms, walking ginger and bamboo orchids. The most fascinating "discovery" was trap-door spider's dens. Unfortunately we did not get to see the spider itself because it was norturnal. After lunch we had telematches in the hall on the first floor of the hotel. The participants were divided into 4 teams. Ably led by Rtn. Soon Ee Hooi, many games were played and everyone had a great time. After dinner we had a karaoke session and hidden talents were discovered.On the last day, prizes were given to the winners of the telematches and some of the participants were invited to share their feelings and opinions on the project. We locked fingers and sang Auld Lang Syne before embarking on our return journey.............until the next Project Shine.

Law of the Garbage Truck
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital! 'This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.
Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

6 Things You Didn’t Know About Belly Fat -- And How to Make it Scram

1. All fat is not alike. Eat more calories than you burn and the extras get packed away in one of two places -- long-term storage depots beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat) or short-term bins deep in the abdomen (visceral fat).

2. The fat you don’t see is the most dangerous. The soft, superficial stuff that ripples your thighs and tummy may be a bikini spoiler, but if you can pinch it, it probably won’t kill you. However, if you have a solid “beer belly" . . . well, you’re likely headed for more trouble than a politician hooked up to a polygraph.

First, don’t rely on your scale. As you start to reduce risky belly fat, your weight may temporarily go up. So ditch the scale in favor of the tape measure. If you’re a woman, your waist should be 32.5 inches; if you’re a man, 35 inches. Creep past 37 inches for women or 40 for men, and the health dangers increase.

3. Stress makes you fat. Not only does stress lead you to eat Haagen-Dazs straight from the carton, but it also triggers the release of cortisol, a stress hormone. Fortunately, any kind of stress reduction, especially exercise, will help short-circuit this stress/fat cycle. Feeling tense right now? Go for a walk the minute you finish this column.

4. The fat you eat affects the fat you get. When monkeys munched on trans-fat laced diets for 6 years, they developed more deep-belly fat than those who went trans-fat-free, even though both ate the same number of calories. Physiologically, we’re close enough to monkeys to extrapolate that trans fat doesn’t do anything good for your waist or your arteries.

5. Blasting belly fat isn’t hard. If you’re not overweight but still have an oversized waist, the fastest way to shrink your omentum is by walking. Taking a brisk 30-minute walk each day will keep those fat cells from expanding.

6. Whole grains scare away belly fat. If you and a friend go on a diet but you eat whole grains (meaning brown rice, steel-cut oats, and whole-wheat pasta, not whole-grain Pop Tarts) and your friend eats processed grains (anything made with white/enriched grains and flours, cupcakes to noodles), you both might lose the same amount of weight, but you’ll shed more belly fat and lower your levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of damaging inflammation. And your food will taste better, and you’ll feel full longer. AND you’ll have a flat stomach!

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.'

Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-d oor baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...'

'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.'

'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?'

'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat !.

After a moment she asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?'

'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.'

'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!'

'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.'

'My, that's a lot!', gasped Mrs. Smith.

'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be In and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.'

'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly.

The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a Po rtfolio of his baby pictures. 'This was done on the top of a bus,' he said.

'Oh, my God!' Mrs. Smith exclaimed, grasping at her throat.

'And these twins turned out exceptionally well - when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.'

'She was difficult?' asked Mrs. Smith.

'Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to the park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep to get a good look'

'Four and five deep?' said Mrs. Smith, her eyes wide with amazement.

'Yes', the photographer replied. 'And for more than three hours, too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling - I could hardly concentrate, and when darkness approached I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just had to pack it all in.'

Mrs. Smith leaned forward. 'Do you mean they actually chewed on your, uh...equipment?'

'It's true, Ma'am, yes.. Well, if you're ready, I'll set-up my tripod and we can get to work right away.'

'Tripod?'

'Oh yes, Ma'am. I need to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big to be held in the hand very long.'

Free Medical Camp 1st March 2009

A Free Medical Camp was organised on 1st March 2009 at USJ1, Subang Jaya, Selangor. The organisers were Rotary Club Bukit Kiara Sunrise, Rotary Club Shah Alam, Persatuan Penduduk Pangsapuri Angsana & Jumble Station.

Lions Medical Assistance Fund was the biggest sponsor with RM5,000 that went to the purchase of medicines. At the event, Puan Sri Collin Herbert represented the Group.

A total of 760 patients were treated with all kinds of ailments ranging from cough and cold to diabetes. 20 volunteer doctors from UMMC and private GPs were present to lend their helping hand. Another 3 dentists (2 from Klinik Kesihatan Medan Maju Jaya and 1 private dentist using 2 mobile dental chairs, treated 150 patients for dental related problem.

A team of 6 pharmacists led by Evelyn Kok dispensed medicine and vitamins to the patients.

Pzifer (a pharmaceutical company) sent a team to assist in the blood pressure, height, cholesterol and eye test.

Vision College sent 3 sonographers led by Ms Chan to carry out ultrasound examination on cases referred by the doctors on duty. A total of 46 patients were scanned. A physiotherapist was also present to do physio on patients with back aches and joint pain.

20 volunteer nurses were also present to assist the doctors. Not to forget as well the countless numbers of other volunteer rotarians, interactors, UMNO youth, Puteri and many many others that I could not mentioned.

At the closing session, Jumble Station put up a sterling performance of a Malay dance followed by giving away of hampers and rice bags to 30 hard-core poor from the area.

I am not able to publish everyone's photos on this blog (because there are so many of you who have contributed) but know that the event will not be a success without the team spirit and Muhibbah that we as MALAYSIANS have potrayed.

Bravo to everyone who has contributed.

The 2nd meeting of the Organising Committee was held at Pusat Kommuniti Pangsapuri Angsana USJ1 on 7th Feb 2009. Programmes in the pipeline are Health check, Health talk, Ultrasound scan, Dental check, Eye check, Health exhibition and many others. This event is organised by Rotary Clubs of Shah Alam & Bukit Kiara Sunrise, Persatuan Penduduk Pangsapuri Angsana & Jumble Station.

Date: Sunday, 1st March 2009

Time : 9am - 3pm

Venue : Angsana Flat, Community Centre, Subang Mewah, USJ 1, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Activities: Doctor's consultation, BP check, diabetic check, eye test, breast cancer exhibition, health talk, ultrasound scan, vitamins and many more....

How to get there: Go to Summit, at the traffic light turn left towards Giants. Pass Mydin and turn right at the next intersection. Chi Wen school should be on your left. Go forward and take a 12 o'clock at the roundabout. Petronas station is on your left. Next is Meranti flat and Angsana is just next to it. Turn left at Angsana and keep going and turn right after Maju restaurant. The community hall is behind this restaurant.

Dear members,

Please be informed that our next Installation Committee Meeting (which is the 3rd Comm. meeting already) will be held on Thu, 5th Feb 2008, 7.30 pm at Rtn Dr Rahman's Office in Shah Alam (next to former Makro or the current Tesco Extra). Nasi lemak dinner will be provided with compliments of PE Jani. We sincerely hope that all Rotarians could make it for this important 30th Installation and Anniversary Meeting. It is very likely that all our 5 sister clubs will be represented during this installation. Your attendance and participation in this and all future installation comm. meetings will be most appreciated as the date of this Installation is fixed for the 9th May 2009 (which is less than 2 and 1/2 months away) at Holiday Villa, Subang Jaya.
Please lend a hand to help lighten the loads. This is a chance to showcase our camaraderie spirit within RCSA. Remember, our guests from overseas will be here for this installation.

Hence, we hope to see all our members at this Thursday organising committee meeting.
